Blackburn Open Barn
April 25 @ 10:00 am
The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and the Kentucky Department of Corrections, will host an open house at the Blackburn Correctional Complex TRF Second Chances Farm. This free event will take place at 3111 Spurr Road, Lexington, KY 40511 on Tuesday, April 25 and the farm will be open from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
The farm is currently home to 57 ex-racehorses who receive supervised care from offenders participating in a vocational training program in equine care and stable management. After their release, graduates of the TRF Second Chances program can use their new technical and life skills to acquire jobs and become productive members of society.
“Blackburn Correctional Complex is very proud to be able to offer this program to our offender population” said Warden Tiffany Ratliff. “The program not only has a positive impact on the thoroughbred racing community, but it provides a unique job skill for the selected participants who will be re-entering society. It teaches these individuals compassion and responsibility, and it challenges them to develop a good work ethic. It provides an opportunity for the men to have a positive experience while incarcerated, and it provides them with a sense of pride and confidence knowing they were able to successfully complete the program.”
The open house will include a meet-and-greet with the horses, farm tours, and demonstrations by current offender-students Light refreshments will be provided. Admission is free but an RSVP is absolutely required and walk-ins cannot be accommodated.
