Simply stated, the
Power of Two campaign will make a dramatic, positive
difference to the Thoroughbreds we now serve as well
as the many human lives the Foundation touches. And,
of critical importance, the campaign will make it
possible to vastly increase the number of horses we
are able to save in the months and years ahead.
As an organization, we are undercapitalized. In the
past we have always sought innovative answers to
funding problems and have overachieved. But these
answers are no longer sufficient. Today, our need is
to create the solid underpinning and platform for
growth that will allow us to advance our humane
mission in ways we are not currently able to.
Here are some of the key projects, activities and
operations that will directly benefit from the Power
of Two campaign:
Horse Rescue and Care Fund, $16 million
Rescue, feed, veterinary services, routine
preventive care and farrier services, adoptive
placement and post-adoption quality assurance,
transport of the growing number of horses in our
care, contingency fund in the event of drought or
other unforeseen conditions.
Expansion Fund, $5 million
Potential sites for major retirement facilities have
been identified in Arkansas, Massachusetts, New
Jersey, Texas, South Carolina and Virginia.
Site Improvement Fund, $1 million
Construction of run-in sheds, barns, classrooms,
landscaping and property renovations.
Endowment Fund, $12 million
To insure the TRF’s future, increase to $20 million
the Foundation's current Paul Mellon endowment.
Special Programs Growth Fund, $1 million
Enhancement and expansion of Racetrack Safety Net
Project, Handicapped Riding, Intercollegiate
Equestrian, and Law Enforcement Second Career
Training programs.
Public and Industry Outreach Fund, $2 million
Nationwide awareness building and education efforts.

According to widely accepted Council of Better
Business Bureau standards, charitable organizations
must apply "a reasonable percentage of public
contributions" to programs and activities directly
related to the purposes for which the organization
exists. The CBBB defines "reasonable" as at
least 50 percent of total contributions.
You will be confident in knowing that not only does
the TRF firmly support CBB efforts to ensure ethical
practices by philanthropic groups, our application
of funds far exceeds Bureau guidelines. In
fact, we are proud that fully 84 percent of every
dollar donated to the TRF goes directly to our
equine rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and
retirement-related programs.
