5K Run for the Horses a total success

And they’re off! The 2016 Run for the Horses is under way.

by Fran LaBelle, Saratoga Springs, NY – Nearly 400 runners, a dozen former Thoroughbred racehorses and plenty of children and dogs added up to a fun-filled morning at the Spa State Park on Saturday, September 3 at the Seventh Annual 5K Run/Walk for the Horses.

Held to benefit the member organizations of  Racehorse After Care Endeavors of Saratoga (RACES), the Run for the Horses attracted top runners as well as people just looking for a run or a stroll in the park.

Sixteen-year-old Clayton Orzel of Saratoga Springs was the overall winner with a time of 18:53.9, besting Brett Sullivan of Ballston Spa (19:13.6) and Jonathan Peck of Glenville (19:27.7).

Cambridge’s Jessica Bashaw was the women’s champion with a time of 19:55.3. She was followed by Orion Goodemote of Middle Grove (21:22.9) and fellow 14-year-old Chelsey Asel (21:29.4) of Kane, Pa.

Joining these participants were former racehorses. Amanda Vance of North Country Horses brought Prince Raffie, Dontstealmyland, Miss Will A Way, Celtic Walk and Broadway Producer, as well as a pony named “Sonny.”  Valerie Buck, founder and owner of ACTT Naturally, brought Three Lions, aka “Budder” and Harlem Rocker, who earned more than $600,000 on track.

King Tut, a 12-year-old Percheron draft horse, was also on hand. King Tut is one of the more famous members of the Saratoga Springs Police Department’s Equine Unit, and for the Run for the Horses, he brought his partner, Officer Aaron Moore.

Peter Goutos, who is co-director of the annual Firecracker 4 race that benefits the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, was back again with his team and that assured a safe and efficient Run for the Horses.

“It has been such a pleasure being able to work with a group of such dedicated and hard-working individuals,” said race organizer Mary Abbruzzese, Event Director for the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation,. “The Run for the Horses is growing and it is because of the support of our local community and volunteers, and we could not be more grateful. Save the date for 2017! More horses, more kids, more dogs, more fun.”

The Eighth Annual Run for the Horses will be held Saturday, September 2, 2017.
