Fun and Sun Lead to Success for Inaugural Tee-Off For TRF & PDJF
by Fran LaBelle, Saratoga Springs, NY – The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund were the beneficiaries of the first Tee-Off for TRF/PDJF charity golf outing at McGregor Links Country Club on Tuesday, August 23. A perfect Saratoga day of sunshine added to the good feeling of all involved.
Approximately 90 golfers participated, including Hall of Fame jockeys Angel Cordero Jr., John Velazquez, Ramon Dominguez, Jacinto Vasquez, Javier Castellano, Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey and former National Football League coaches Bill Parcells and Dan Henning.
Hosted by former jockey Richard Migliore, the tournament’s top player was Parcells, who guided the New York Giants to victory in Super Bowls XXI and XXV. Parcells shot a 59 and also won the putting contest.
“This was a great day to help two causes that are very near and dear to my heart,” said Migliore, a television racing analyst, motivational speaker and TRF Board Member. “Everyone here today owes something to the horses. Certainly the jockeys, and certainly Saratoga itself, as horses are what attracts visitors here every summer. Horses need safe homes when they are through racing.
“The PDJF is also important to me. I have had many injuries during my racing career, and I have been lucky just to be here. But there are a lot of my fellow jockeys who sustained injuries that not only ended their careers, but changed their lives and their families’ lives as well. I am grateful to everyone who came out today to make this a success and to, hopefully, start a new annual tradition here.”
Jockeys Jose Ortiz, Mike Luzzi, Aaron Gryder, Joel Rosario and Kendrick Carmouche, were among the golfers and guests who enjoyed a hearty breakfast, a day of golf and post-golf cocktails, music and award presentations.
Additionally, there was a silent auction and the top item was a halter worn by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, that was donated by Ashford Stud in Frankfort, Ky., headquarters of Coolmore America.
Sponsoring the event were: TVG Network; Jana Domino Thoroughbred Foundation; Dr. Konstantin Frank Wine Cellars; Tito’s; Ocala Breeders’ Sales; Saratoga Eagle; DePaula Chevrolet; James and Lydia Perry; Final Furlong Racing; Death Wish Coffee Company; Eight Oaks Distillers; Hogan Equine; Nancy and Gary DiCresce; LBI Equine Services; McGregor Links Country Club; West Point Thoroughbreds. Inc.; Daily Racing Form; Turning Point Chiropractic; TD Ameritrade and Parting Glass Racing.
“We are so grateful to our sponsors and to everyone who made this a wonderful, fun day of golf,” said TRF Director of External Affairs Diana Pikulski, “Everyone recognized the chance to help two worthy cases and their generosity and cooperation was highly appreciated. It was so much fun that we are all looking forward to doing it again next year.”
