TRF Rescues

The Story Begins: March 2019

In early March the TRF was asked to assist in a neglect case in New York’s Hudson Valley. By mid March, we had welcomed 4 new horses to the TRF herd. Joey, Ice, Candy and Emma are now living at the TRF Saratoga Summer Farm where our staff and dedicated volunteers can directly attend to all of their needs.

The collaboration demonstrated by our colleagues across the New York Thoroughbred community has been extraordinary. A difficult situation has been quickly addressed and we cannot adequately thank everyone involved for all they have done to help the horses in need. Throughout these past weeks, the welfare of the horses in need has remained the top priority and concern for all of us. The TRF is grateful for the support and professionalism of the industry organizations who worked closely with us over these last few weeks.

We would like to thank our partners in Thoroughbred Aftercare ReRun: Thoroughbred Adoption, Akindale Thoroughbred Rescue, Equine Rescue of Aiken and the Thoroughbred Charities of America for providing homes for many of the horses who were caught in this unfortunate situation. Each of these organizations rose to the challenge and made a positive impact. We thank them for their amazing support.

This rescue also was made possible through the generous in kind donations from the Equine Clinic at Oakencroft, Gallagher’s Stud, Dr. Rod Stewart, Lukens Horse Transport, McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, New York State Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund Corp, and New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association.

At the TRF we can say with certainty that each horse we take in to our herd will have a safe home for the rest of his or her life. The TRF offers the promise of a lifetime of safe, secure sanctuary. In our herd each horse will be treated with the love, kindness and care, he or she deserves. It is the policy of the TRF to track our horses forever, even when they are adopted. We look forward to sharing the progress of our new rescues over the coming weeks.

We look forward to introducing you to Candy, Ice, Joey and Emma over the weeks ahead. The horses will share their stories as we nurse them back to health and eventually introduce them to their new homes within the larger TRF herd. Stay tuned for our blog, starting April 8th.

You can help us write the next chapter!! The care we provide to these  horse and the 650 rescued and retired Thoroughbreds in our nationwide herd, is only possible through the generous donations of our supporters across the US and around the world.  We invite you to give a gift today to these four horses who have each been born to greatness, run their best, suffered a career ending injury, and now, find themselves in their forever home within the TRF herd.

Every dollar makes a difference, and every day makes a difference.

Today we ask you to consider a contribution toward the special care required by these rescues.

Our rescues have arrived with a variety of severe health conditions and care requirements that the TRF will address over the weeks ahead to bring them back to health. We estimate our budget for each horse at $10,000.
