The TRF will introduce the public to the TRF’s new Herd Ambassadors at the first of four public Open Barns

Saratoga Springs, N.Y. – On Monday, July 22, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) will host the first of four public Open Barns at the TRF Saratoga Summer Farm at Bloomfield Farm from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. At 6pm a brief ground-work demonstration will take place in the Bloomfield Farm arena.  This event is free, family-friendly, handicapped accessible and open to the public. Donations are welcome and merchandise will be on sale.

Based on the success of the 2018 TRF Saratoga Summer farm, the TRF will host four public Open Barns during the 2019 Saratoga race meet to introduce racing fans and the broader Saratoga community to the importance of Thoroughbred aftercare and specifically to the role of the TRF in providing lifelong sanctuary to the horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack.  The dates for the Open Barns are July 22, July 29, August 12 and August 26th (5:00 – 8:00pm). Each Open Barn is intended to educate and connect the racing fans and local community to the horses, to tell their stories, and to inspire support for the work of the TRF and its partner organizations within the Thoroughbred aftercare industry.

On Monday afternoon, Joey (Uptown Joe), Suprize (Supurb Suprize ), Candyman (Candyman E) and Iceman (Call The Iceman) will welcome visitors to meet them, feed them treats, take their photos and share their stories from the racetrack to the TRF herd.  TRF staff and volunteers will be on hand to introduce the horses, to answer questions and to educate visitors about the 650 horses that reside in the nationwide TRF herd.

The TRF’s Summer Farm “Herd Ambassadors” bring their own unique stories to their roles this summer. The four horses were taken into the TRF’s nationwide herd of 650 retired Thoroughbreds through a collaborative response to a severe rescue episode in early March.  The four horses arrived in the care of the TRF in dire need of intensive nutritional and medical attention. Over the past months the horses have made steady progress toward health and have bright prospects for the next chapters of their lives. Their journey to health has been chronicled in the TRF’s blog and the organization has launched a specific fund-raising campaign with a goal of $40,000 to cover the cost of their care over the course of their recovery.
